What Are Ceramides and Why Do You Need Them In Your Skincare Routine?

What are ceramides? They’re essentially lipids, or fats, that are found naturally in high concentrations in the uppermost layers of the skin. Considering that they account for over 50% of skin’s composition, it’s no surprise that they play an important role in your skin’s health.

Ceramides…. Sounds scary, doesn’t it? But I assure you, ceramides shouldn’t be feared. In fact, they’re super beneficial in your anti-aging skincare lineup and your body already produces it naturally! If you’re curious about ceramides, read on for the full rundown.

So if I already have them, why do I need them in my skincare routine?

Your natural ceramides experience wear and tear and become less effective over time. Sun damage and age reduce the strength and ability of your skin’s ceramides and can even fully deplete them. By using products containing ceramides, you can restore the diminished supply and even prompt the body to produce more.

What do they actually do?

Think of ceramides like the icing between cake layers. They help hold your skin together by forming a protective layer that holds in moisture and shields against environmental aggressors, such as pollution and sun exposure. As your ceramides lose their efficacy over time, your skin loses moisture, volume, and elasticity. In other words, skin becomes drier and you begin to show signs of aging. Thus it is essential to add ceramides into your skincare routine to maintain a strong barrier to protect your skin from signs of aging, irritation, and dehydration. The result will be plumper, smoother, and firmer skin with fewer visible lines and wrinkles. It’s an anti-aging miracle!

How do you find ceramides?

Typically, you’ll find “ceramide” listed on the ingredient label of your skincare products. However, there are also ingredients such as phytosphingosine and sphingosine, which are known as ceramide precursors. They serve as a catalyst for the skin to produce ceramides.

And that’s the scoop on ceramides!
