Wearing a mask or face covering is important in reducing the spread of COVID-19. For many, these face masks have resulted in maskne, skin irritation, bruising, rashes and itchiness. So how can we reduce maskne while staying safe? Read on to find out!

What is Maskne?

Maskne (mask acne) is breakouts located in the areas where your mask touches your face. It happens as a result of the friction created by the mask rubbing against the skin as well as the warm, moist environment caused by our trapped breath, sweat, oil, and bacteria.

How can you prevent it?

Once you remove your mask:

Step 1: Cleanse, Cleanse, Cleanse!

Use a gentle cleanser with skin-loving ingredients to minimize disruption to your skin barrier. Avoid any that are formulated with irritants like synthetic fragrances which can exacerbate skin reactions. We recommend using a hydrating cleanser that will wash away any impurities while nourishing your skin. It’s best to avoid any cleansers that are too harsh and strip your skin of its natural oils.

Step 2: Balance and Refresh

It’s post-mask mist time! Mist Connection, our 2-in-1 essence and toner works to moisturize and balance in one step. Use after cleansing to create a moisturized, balanced and softened base to allow the rest of your skincare routine to work more effectively. The ultra-fine nozzle dispenses a luxurious, cloud-like mist that feels extra refreshing after wearing your mask for long periods of time!

Step 3: Hydrate and Give Skin a Boost

Your skin barrier is constantly being compromised throughout the day by humidity, sweat and moisture underneath your mask. It’s crucial to reinforce your skin barrier day and night. Using a face oil or moisturizer with nourishing ingredients after cleansing will give your skin the extra boost it needs to repair itself as you sleep. An overnight hydrating face mask is also another great way to add moisture to your skin.
