Spring Clean Your RoutineBy Emily Chiang | Mar 24, 2021
If you’ve been putting this off for a while, now’s the perfect time to Spring clean your routine! After all, what other plans do you have anyways, besides working from home and watching Netflix? While we can’t quite experience the warmer weather, sunnier skies, and the outdoors as we’d usually do, we can at least freshen up our collection and make the most of our current routine. Keep reading our tips to find the best ways to maximize and clean your beauty regimen.
CLEAN YOUR BEAUTY TOOLS
Let’s face it, cleaning our makeup brushes, beauty sponges, cushions, and other beauty tools definitely isn’t at the top of our to-do list. At the very least, not cleaning your sponges or brushes can hinder your makeup application, leading to cakier looking foundation or mixing in colors you didn’t intend to add. But at the very worst, dirty tools can accumulate dirt and sweat from prior applications and even collect dust. This can potentially cause breakouts, bacterial infections, and even a stye if you reuse the same brushes on your eyes.
Luckily, the solution is really simple. You don’t need to invest in a fancy brush or beauty sponge cleanser. All you need is bar soap or dish soap and water, and get to scrubbing. It’s always such a satisfying feeling to use clean tools. Your face will thank you for it.
REPLACE EXPIRED PRODUCTS
Speaking of clean beauty tools, don’t forget to replace your beauty sponge and your expired products. Since beauty sponges require you to dampen them, it can be a breeding ground for fungi and mold. If you’re using a sponge every day, it’s ideal to replace it every three months.
For other products such as makeup and skincare products, make sure to look at the back of the product for a period-after-opening symbol. The period-after-opening symbol is a tiny icon that includes a picture of a container opening and text stating “6M” or “1Y”. This symbol and number indicate the amount of time a product can be used since it’s the first time of opening. 6M means the product will last for 6 months since its opening, while 1Y or 2Y indicates it can be safe to use for 1 or 2 years since its opening. This includes the first time you may have swatched products or simply opened a product jar.
Cream, liquid, organic, or natural-based products tend to have quicker expiration dates while powders tend to last longer. Here is a general guide:
-Liquid Foundations: Six months to one year
-Liquid Highlight: Six months to one year
-Liquid Concealer: Six months to one year
-Powder products (loose powder, blush, powder foundation, bronzer): Two years
-Cream stick products (cream stick blush, lipsticks, stick foundations): 12 to 18 months
-Pencil Liner: One year
-Mascara and liquid liners: Three months
-Eyeshadow: One to two years
On the bright side, tossing away products gives you a reason to go shopping!
SANITIZE YOUR MAKEUP
Just like sanitizing your hands, sanitizing your makeup is also important to prevent bacteria build-up. This is especially important if you’re sharing makeup, traveling with products, or applying makeup on a client. Disinfecting your makeup is super simple:
- Grab a tissue and gently wipe off a light layer of product from the compact or pan
- Spray 70% isopropyl alcohol throughout the pan as well as the product packaging
- Wait for the alcohol to dry down and evaporate (this takes up to 5 minutes)
- Wipe down the packaging
That’s it! The same goes for cream products as well. Unfortunately, you can’t really disinfect mascara or liquid eyeliners. Just make sure to replace them regularly and use disposable applicators if possible. Enjoy your squeaky clean products!
AVOID DUPLICATE PRODUCTS OR INGREDIENTS
The ten-step skincare routine can be really tempting. Posting shelfies of all your favorite skincare products can be really satisfying. But if you’re really looking to clean your routine, find ways to avoid duplicating active ingredients. For example, if your moisturizer already contains hyaluronic acid, there’s no need to have a separate hyaluronic acid serum. In fact, having repetitive active ingredients can overload your skin. Another popular product duplicate is eye creams. The base of most moisturizers and eye creams are water, glycerin, and some sort of dimethicone hybrid. Unless your eye cream contains an active ingredient such as retinol, vitamin C, or caffeine, you don’t really need a separate cream for the under-eye area. The same goes for neck creams too! Lastly, your face oils can double as your hair oil. If you’re using a skin-safe oil such as jojoba oil, rosehip oil, or tamanu oil, after applying it to your face, use the excess oil and run it through the ends of your hair.
FIND REUSABLE ALTERNATIVES
Removing your makeup every day with cotton pads can fill up the trash pretty quickly. Try reusable cotton rounds or microfiber towels that can remove the product just as effectively. The environment and your wallet will thank you.
