Skincare 101: Everything You Need To Know About Layering Your Skincare

Are you ready to achieve your #skingoals? A great routine begins with understanding how you layer your skincare. Not to say your skincare products aren’t effective when you apply them randomly, but following a specific order will help maximize the benefits of each of your products so they work more efficiently. Of course, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all skincare routine that works for everyone, so you may need to add or subtract products as you see fit based on your skin’s needs. The multitaskers we will discuss today can be used as a general guide and a foundation for building your own personal routine. Simple, impactful skincare is what we’re all about at Wander Beauty so you can get gorgeous and get going. Let’s get down to the basics.

1. Cleanser

Prior to applying any products onto your face, you want to make sure that you have a clean base to start with. Cleansing removes any traces of makeup and impurities from your skin so your skincare products can go to work. Gently massage your cleanser in circular motions and rinse away any impurities that have built up throughout the day or while you were sleeping.

Tip: Make sure to cleanse around your hairline, jawline, and neck to remove any leftover makeup or residue you may have missed.

2. Essence and/or Toner

Essence and/or toner are a great next step for further removing any leftover makeup or impurities that your cleanser might have missed. Using it will help balance your skin’s pH levels which can prevent excess oil production or dryness. It also acts like a primer for skincare because by balancing your skin's pH, your remaining skincare essentials can do its job more effectively.

Try: Mist Connection Essence and Toner<product>2</product>

3. Face Mask

There is a huge variety of face masks in the market. Face masks help to target your individual beauty and skin concerns and they are the perfect addition to your skincare routine. Not only are face masks relaxing, but they can also be the solution to improving your skin conditions such as any dullness, oiliness, or even dryness. To maximize the benefits of your face mask, make sure you follow the instructions for your specific mask, which can usually be found on the carton or container that the mask comes in. If the instructions state to cleanse your face prior to using it, make sure you do so! Cleansing removes any dirt or grime you collected on your face throughout the day.

Tip: If you are using a face mask for the first time, be sure to conduct a patch test on the inner arm or neck prior to use. If your skin turns red, do not continue.

Try: Staycation Hydrating Face Mask<product>3</product>

4. Moisturizer

Never skip your moisturizer, Wander Beauties! Choosing the right moisturizer results in hydrated, radiant skin that glows and makes makeup application even more seamless. Even if you have oily skin, using a moisturizer helps keep your skin balanced. It may seem counterintuitive for those with oily skin, but by adding moisture rather than stripping skin, the skin actually balances out oil production over time. By skipping moisturizer, your skin may actually be producing more oil, which causes excess sebum that is more likely to clog pores. Moisturizers help fight signs of aging and maintain your skin’s protective barrier.

Try: Dive In™ Moisturizer<product>4</product>

Not sure what the difference between hydrating vs. moisturizing is? Read our post here to help determine what kind of nourishment your skin needs.

5. Overnight Concentrate

Maximize your time between the sheets! Sleep is a time of intense repair and regeneration for your skin. Amp up the skin's renewal process with an overnight repair concentrate. If you are applying an overnight concentrate, you can apply it onto a clean face and neck either before or after moisturizer. We recommend that you do not use a chemical facial peel mask with an overnight concentrate to avoid any skin irritation.

Try:
Do Not Disturb Overnight Repair Concentrate<product>5</product>

6. Face Oil

At Wander Beauty, we love a good face oil - they’re potent skin saviors that work wonders. You should always use a face oil after moisturizer for maximum results and to lock in the benefits of all of the aforementioned layers. It locks in water and creates a protective barrier on your skin. If applied before your moisturizer, there is a chance that it will block the moisturizer and any other skin products from penetrating deeply and working their magic. The molecular structure of face oils is what allows them to penetrate deep into your skin for maximum hydration, even when layered on top of moisturizer. Not only that but using a good face oil helps to repair and plump your skin while nourishing it with essential nutrients and fatty acids.

Try: Glow Ahead Face Oil<product>6</product>

7. SPF

SPF is essential to your daytime skincare routine. Regardless of the weather or the season, never skip on applying SPF to your face. A cloudy day does not mean that you are not exposed to UV rays. In fact, damaging UV rays are intensified during the winter because snow tends to reflect them, so you are double exposed. Applying a good sunscreen will protect your skin from damaging UVA and UVB rays as well as the blue light from your electronics. Sun exposure is one of the main reasons for premature aging which includes: sunspots, wrinkles, and reduced skin elasticity. SPF should be applied last because it creates a protective barrier on the surface of your skin.

After following these steps, you can go straight into applying your makeup, or face the day as a bare-faced beauty with gorgeous, glowing skin! Cheers, to clear skin!
