Multitasking isn’t always easy, but some people make it look like it is. Kirsten Brusse, aka @thebeautyblotter, is one of those people. The makeup artist, blogger and mom of two is one of our favorite follows - just take a look at her feed of airy product shots, easy makeup looks and outfits, and you’ll be smitten too. We sat down to get all of the juicy details on how she multitasks, her morning routine and her top advice as a makeup artist.

Tell us who you are and what you do!

I’m Kirsten Brusse and I am a makeup artist with 20+ years of industry experience and the owner of my blog, The Beauty Blotter, where I share quick and easy beauty tips and fashion finds for women 40+. I live in Annapolis, MD with my husband and 2 teenage boys.

As you know, at Wander Beauty, we're all about multitasking. What does being a multitasker look like and mean to you?

I am a makeup artist and blogger, but I am also a wife and mom. Multitasking is my life. One day, I am on location, doing makeup for a big corporate shoot, or creating content for my blog, and the next I am scrubbing toilets in my house and driving carpool. It makes me laugh sometimes how different my life can be, but I love it and wouldn’t trade it for anything. I love that I am able to be present in my family's life, while still pursuing my dream job. Blogging has given me the freedom to work and still be home for with family. I have learned over the years to be a problem solver. If something needs to get done, there is always a way. You just have to figure it out, and sometimes you have to get creative.

You're a mom, makeup artist and content creator. Tell us how you balance it all!

I am lucky that when I am not on location for a makeup job, I mostly work from home, which allows me some flexibility in my day-to-day. However, the lines can get blurred very quickly so I try to keep some order by sticking to a schedule. Although my days are always different, I have a slot on my calendar for everything, including self care and date nights. That way, I scheduled time for it and I don’t feel like I should be doing something else. I am also a big list maker and always jot down my top three things I want to accomplish for the day. It helps me stay focused. But, truth be told there are days where my life is total chaos and I am running around looking for my sunglasses that are on top of my head. I think every woman and mom can relate to that! I have learned to go with the flow and be okay with it. Tomorrow is always another day. In the end, my family is what is most important and that makes everything else in my life fall into place pretty easily.

What does your morning routine look like?

Unless I am on an early shoot, I wake up at 6:18AM every morning. The truth is, I am NOT a morning person and hit the snooze button exactly twice before I actually get out of bed. I make breakfast and lunches and catch up with my boys about their life, while I have my morning coffee. They are both out of the house by 7:45AM. I take about 15 minutes to answer emails and browse through my social media and at 8:00AM I try to squeeze in a quick workout, or a walk, and shower and get ready for the day. After that, my days vary wildly, from writing content, to shooting videos or photos, to doing errands and housework. It all depends on the day.

You only have 15 minutes to get ready (which we imagine is a regular occurrence with your busy life!): What's your go-to makeup look and outfit?

15 minutes is actually a lot of time! In general I am pretty unfussy and low maintenance. If it is a shoot day, I spend a bit more time on my appearance and do a full face of makeup and hair. On regular days, I wear very little makeup. The one product I swear by is the Wander Beauty Catch The Light Highlighter and Glowtion. It makes my skin look flawless and the highlighter gives my face a nice, believable glow. At my age, it is all about youthful looking skin and this product helps me achieve that.<product>1</product>

My go-to outfit is pretty much always some sort of jeans and t-shirt variation. It makes getting dressed so easy, I don’t have to think about it. When I am on location, I typically wear all black.

Let's talk self-care: It's been a long week - how do you unwind?

A good glass of wine and a hot bath always do the trick for me. It let's me forget about my day. Then I like to binge watch a good, girly show. I am currently obsessed with the show “Younger". It is so funny and relevant to women my age.

As a makeup artist, what is the top piece of advice you have for anyone who may not know where to start when it comes to beauty?

Skincare comes first. Your makeup will only look as good as the canvas it is applied upon, so make sure your skin is in good shape. Second, don’t go makeup shopping without a plan and a list. It gets overwhelming fast. You should focus on basic products that will enhance your features and help you look your best. For example, a good foundation, blush, mascara and lip gloss are a great place to start. That is why I love Wander beauty. Their products are beautiful, multi-functional and so user-friendly. I have been a fan for years. Also, every woman should own an eyelash curler and learn how to use it correctly. Lastly, get a makeup mirror. It makes application so much easier.

What's one quick way to switch up your beauty look using something you likely already have in your makeup bag?

One of the most versatile products in your makeup bag is a good eyeshadow palette filled with flattering neutral tones. It can to you from a natural daytime look to a dramatic smokey eye and everything in between. You have many different looks.
