The Wander Beauty Guide to Lash Care

Wander Beauty Mascara Lash Products

The attention we give to our eyelashes usually begins and ends with a few swipes of mascara in the morning and a makeup wipe in the evening. But lashes aren't purely aesthetic – they play an important role in protecting your eyes from foreign particles and pollution, which makes caring for them an essential part of your routine.

The good news is that eyelashes have a life cycle of between four and 11 months, and while they don’t require much upkeep, some basic care can help prevent infections, irritation, inflammation, and lash loss.

Common eyelash concerns

Common eyelash concerns include lash loss, stunted growth, dryness, and brittleness. These problems can occur for several reasons, including irritating makeup ingredients, allergies to makeup or skincare products, forceful use of eyelash curlers, or bad false lash removal techniques. Certain health conditions such as eczema, alopecia, thyroid conditions, and excessive stress may also result in poor lash health.

Our top lash care tips

While a volume mascara like Unlashed Volume and Curl Mascara can certainly give you the appearance of a fuller lash line, it's best to pair this with general lash care for naturally healthy, full lashes. Here are a few of our top lash care tips.<product>1</product>

Tend your lashes daily

The simplest and most effective way of maintaining the health of your lashes comes down to your daily routine. Clean your lashes before going to bed every night. A gentle comb will help remove dirt and debris from the lashes, while patting the eyes down using a gentle cleanser suitable for the eye area, such as B.O.M. Voyage Cleansing Balm, will remove makeup and keep the follicles unclogged.<product>2</product>

Limit lash loss

Lash loss can be significantly reduced by not doing the following:

  • Rubbing your eyes while wearing mascara
  • Picking mascara off
  • Cleansing mascara off by aggressively rubbing the eye area
  • Removing false lashes by ripping them off

Instead, dab your eyes when removing makeup rather than rubbing and scraping. And when removing false lashes, first soften the adhesive with eye makeup remover then pinch the outer edge of the false eyelash strip before gently pulling it away from the lash line.

Promote lash growth

Just like you use special products to care for your skin and hair, a lash-conditioning serum can help lash length and density. To save you from having to add yet another step to your skincare routine, we’ve created Upgraded Lashes™ Thickening Mascara. This lash treatment formula will hydrate your lashes using panthenol and make your lashes soft and pliable with castor oil – all while wearing your daily mascara!<product>3</product>

Avoid damaging ingredients

When trying to improve your lash health, it's best to avoid mascaras and cleansers that contain alcohol, which can be very drying and cause the lashes to become brittle, resulting in breakage. You’ll also want to choose mascaras that are free of parabens and phthalates, which can cause irritation and lend to more serious health concerns.

Give your lashes some space

If you’ve been struggling with lash loss, it may be tempting to reach for false lashes to get that full, dramatic look. However, this may ultimately make the problem worse. Instead, it's best to minimize the irritants and focus on nourishing your lashes. During this time, you can use a lash-loving mascara such as Mile High Club™ Length and Define Mascara – one of the best mascaras for length and curl – which will give you a fanned-out effect without damaging your lashes.<product>4</product>

Focus on nutrition

You've probably noticed the effect your diet has on your skin, and what you consume can affect the health of your hair too  – lashes included! A nutrient-rich diet packed with clean proteins, leafy greens, fruit, and healthy fats. Supplements such as biotin and collagen have also been found to improve the health of your hair and lashes.

Luscious lashes, wherever you wander

Our range of lash-loving mascaras will keep you looking your best, whatever the occasion. To get the best from your mascara of choice, read Luscious Lashes: Mascara Application Techniques, or explore The Wanderess Edit for more expert beauty and skincare tips.
