Tell us who you are and what you do!
My name is Kiane von Mueffling. Just over a year ago I founded Sold Out NYC, a brand created by women, for women, and about women. Our tees and sweatshirts are largely statement-based with the objective of empowering women and allowing them to do so with high-quality, killer style. It’s not complicated: we just want to be part of a movement where women support one another and are infinitely proud of who they are.
How did you get to this point?
It’s been quite a ride. My initial background is in corporate strategy, private equity and banking. I loved being surrounded by a hyper-intelligent peer group and I loved the challenge, but I felt completely starved of creativity. I had kids, and during a period of rebellion (and with no prior experience), I trained and became a SoulCycle instructor for two years. This was the first time I experienced truly loving a job. There is nothing quite like inspiring a packed room of 70 people. I realized though for the sake of my kids (and poor husband), that I needed a more “normal” schedule - one where I wasn’t leaving for work at 5am and often coming home after 8pm.
What inspired you to create Sold Out NYC?
I love the idea of being able to wear a message, especially in our current political and social environment. That has only escalated since the brand was created. I especially love the idea of empowering women– any way to be a part of that movement is inspiring to me.
What was the first item you ever created and sold?
The first collection was four statement tees, one of which simply read “Woman”. People loved it.
Best advice you've ever received?
From my mother: “You only get out what you put in.” It’s the simple truth.
If you had to pick just one mantra/word to print on a t-shirt to wear every day, what would it be?
“LOVE” in every language. It begins and end with that. For yourself, for others, for life.
Describe your beauty style in 3 words.
Simple. Speedy. A little flair.
As you know, we're all about the multitasking lifestyle. What does multitasking mean to you as an entrepreneur?
It is ESSENTIAL. In saying that, it is important not to get overwhelmed. I know myself, and during the day I need 30 minutes without a meeting, without my phone, without kids - otherwise, I feel like a rat in a wheel. It’s important to identify what it is you need and to do your best to give that to yourself.
How do you wind down at the end of the day?
Is it wrong to say a glass of vino? That, or a Netflix episode with the hubby (or both of those things!)
