A smile is the best accessory you can wear and you can thank your lips for that! Lips are one of the most fascinating body parts. They’re the reason you can express yourself and give kisses to the ones you love. To show your lips the appreciation they deserve, don’t forget about them in your daily beauty routine!

No Sweat Zone

Do you ever feel like your lips are always chapped? Regardless of the season, you can experience dryness on the lips as well as cracking. The reason for that is because your lips don’t have sweat glands! They are unable to sweat and secrete oils, which is why they actually dry out faster than other parts of your body. Additionally, lips are more vulnerable to external aggressions such as the sun, wind, etc. Your lips only produce a small amount of melanin, which makes them more sensitive to UV rays.

Did you know: The skin on your lips are more delicate and thinner than skin on anywhere else on your body. It consists of three to five layers of skin compared to the sixteen layers of skin elsewhere.

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!

So how can you prevent chapped, cracked and vulnerable lips? The answer is to keep your lips hydrated and to use SPF! There are so many options for you to pick from to moisturize and protect your lips.

One of our favorite ways to moisturize our lips is by using a lip oil. Lip oils can be applied daily, morning and night, or throughout the day - the choice is yours. If you want to give your lips a moisturizing treatment, choose a clear lip oil and slather it on before bed. Sleep with it on and wake up to baby soft lips. There are also many lip oils that have a gorgeous tint which is perfect for adding a touch of color to your appearance while treating lips. They can be applied onto bare lips or layered over your favorite lip color. They leave a beautiful glossy finish that shines gorgeously.

Fun fact: Similar to your fingertips, there is no such thing as having identical lip impressions. Your lips are just as unique as you are and there is nothing more special than that!

Another one of our favorite ways to keep our lips hydrated is with a lip balm. Lip balms are life-changing. Not only do they replenish your lips’ natural moisture barrier, they also help to reduce the appearance of fine lines on lips! As you get older, fine lines appear more quickly so one of the best ways to prevent your lips from aging quickly is by keeping them moisturized. There are many lip balms that contain SPF which is a great way to protect your lips from external aggressors like the environment. SPF is a crucial step to your skincare and it should also be an essential step in your lip care routine.

Finally, I can’t stress this enough: Drink water! The key to hydrated skin and lips is drinking enough water daily. Chapped lips are a sign of your lips crying for water - quench its thirst.

Scrub Your Way To Smoothness

Lip scrubs
are another great addition to your lip care (and skincare) routine. Exfoliating your lips helps improve their texture while removing dead skin cells. Removing these dead skin cells allow your lip products to apply more smoothly and have longer staying power, all while revealing plumper, softer lips. Even if you choose not to apply a lip product over exfoliated lips, your lips will display a more natural glow whereas lips with dead skin look more dull.

A quick and easy, natural diy lip scrub you can make at home is a honey-sugar lip scrub. Honey is super moisturizing and sugar is an amazing gentle exfoliator. Together, they make the perfect moisturizing lip scrub.

  1. Grab a small bowl and something to mix with

  2. Add one teaspoon of honey with two teaspoons of sugar into your bowl

  3. Mix!

  4. Apply the scrub to your lips and gently massage the mixture into your lips

  5. Wash the scrub off

  6. Apply lip balm to moisturize your lips
