How To Apply Makeup Like A Boss

Applying makeup can be (and should be!) a whole lot of fun. When you have the correct tools and products, there’s nothing more exciting than spending an afternoon experimenting with fresh looks.

Whether you’re a seasoned makeup user or just getting started, it never hurts to get some tips and tricks on how to apply makeup like the boss you are. That’s exactly why we’re here: to walk you through the tools you’ll need and the products that will help you shine.

We’ll even help answer some of your most pressing makeup questions.

What Tools Will I Need?

It doesn’t matter if you have all the best makeup if you don’t have the correct tools to apply it with! Luckily, all of our formulas are finger-friendly. But if you prefer to use tools, we of course have some options.

Grab your beauty bag and root through to make sure you have these products in your makeup arsenal. Lacking one or a few? We know a place that can help!

Foundation Brush or Sponge

The first thing that you absolutely need is a foundation brush or sponge to apply -- you guessed it -- your foundation.

You could, of course, have both in case you want to switch up how you put on your foundation, but most people will have a favorite.

If you opt for a foundation brush, it should be equipped with high-density bristles so you can cover your face quickly and easily. Our dual-ended Nude Illusion Liquid Foundation Brush also features a flat foundation brush to blend hard-to-reach areas.<product>1</product>

If you prefer the sponge approach, we have the Wander Cushion, which is latex-free and can either be used damp or dry. The best part? It works with powders, creams, and liquids. Win-win!<product>2</product>

Blush and Bronzer Brush

Up next is the Blush and Bronzer Brush -- because why have two separate brushes take up precious space in your beauty bag when you can have one product that does it all? And that’s exactly what this brush does: it all. It’s dual-ended, so you can apply powders and liquids seamlessly.<product>3</product>

Eyeshadow Brush

If you’re an eyeshadow aficionado, you know how important having the right eyeshadow brush can be to properly apply your product. Our Wandering Eyes Dual Eyeshadow Brush, is dual-sided and luxurious, featuring both a precise shader brush and a fluffy, light blending brush.<product>4</product>

What Makeup Should I Use?

Choosing and applying your makeup is a highly personal process, so we encourage you to do what feels natural and right to you. Additionally, the makeup you should use all comes down to what makes you feel like your most authentic, beautiful self.

If that means putting on a full face of makeup every day, awesome! If that means sticking with the basics and just swiping on some mascara and lipstick, great! Wear whatever you feel comfortable in.

Face Makeup

It’s essential to master your complexion makeup because it is the canvas for the rest of your makeup look. That being said, before you apply a full face of foundation and concealer, let’s go back to the basics and prep our skin.

Moisturizer

Great makeup starts with great skin. Before diving into makeup, make sure to do your skincare routine. Ideally, your moisturizer will help lock in that deep hydration while also soothing your skin. This is something that everyone should have in their beauty bag -- hydrating your skin is oh-so-important, and our light formula does that without weighing yours down.

Primer

Up next is primer. Think of your primer as supporting your skin. It fills in your pores, makes blemishes seemingly blur, and provides a smoothness to your skin, all while locking in your look for the day.

Foundation and Concealer

Let’s talk about foundation. This is going to be the base for the rest of your look. You’ll apply this all over your face and be sure to blend it in. It is important to note that there are a few different types of foundation, such as powder and liquid. When deciding which to choose, you might have to do a bit of experimentation.

A lot of people pick which type of foundation they use based on their skin type and we recommend you do that, too. That being said, there are some additional things to take into account. We’ll get into that later.

Concealer is up next. If you have any blemishes, spots, discoloration, or anything else you’d like to cover up, this is the product to do exactly that. Just dab it on and you’re good to go.

Blush, Bronzer, and Highlight

Now for the fun stuff: blush, bronzer, and highlighter. Think of these as the finishing touches for your face makeup. They’re also super fun to personalize. This is where you can start to play around with color. Use some bronzer and highlighter to add definition and glow.

Eye Makeup

Eye makeup is especially exciting because it’s an opportunity to express yourself through your makeup -- especially when it comes to your eyeshadow. But first, let’s talk about the basics.

Brow Gel and Liner

Ask anyone who has tried brow gel or liner and they’ll tell you their life changed once they tried the product. With just a quick swipe, you can achieve more defined, bold brows. Once you’ve mastered that, it’s time to move on to the more advanced part of eye makeup -- eyeshadow, liner, and finally, mascara.

Eyeshadow

Eyeshadow is an exciting part of the eye makeup process because there’s an opportunity to have fun with your makeup. You can layer on a rich, jewel-toned eyeshadow, or keep it natural and neutral with something barely there. You might find that you prefer liquid, or want to keep it classic with a good palette -- plenty of options!

Eyeliner

Up next is eyeliner. This can dramatically elevate your look, so prepare to be impressed! Gel eyeliner is a creamy, easy to apply option that anyone can use. It has our seal of approval, and we think it will get yours too. You can line the tops and bottoms of your eyes, or stick with one or the other.

Mascara

Finally, add a swipe of mascara. It’s one of the most wearable products, and it will make your lashes look long and swoon-worthy. Our formula is designed to lengthen and define. The end result? Full, fanned out lashes.

Pro Tip: For a little extra curl, use an eyelash curler to really accent those lashes!

Lips

A good lip product is a final touch to any look. Lip products are another way you can use makeup to express yourself - there are so many gorgeous shades.

Liner, Lipstick, and Gloss

Lip liner can seem intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. Think of it as the tool that will help you define your perfect smile and help you color inside the lines when applying lipstick. Our formula won’t smudge or fade, so your lip liner will look totally natural.

Pair it with some lipstick, and you’re ready to go. (Pssst, we have a product that combines the two -- you can thank us later!)

Last but not least, you can top your lips off with some gloss to add a little extra shine. A successful lip gloss will give your lips moisture and can be worn solo or layered with lipstick and lip liner for a bolder look. So chic!

Finish with Translucent Powder or Setting Spray

Last but certainly not least, you can’t skip out on the translucent powder or setting spray. These products are responsible for helping the rest of your makeup stay put -- AKA making sure all your hard work doesn’t go to waste.

Also, if you want to “bake” your makeup, that powder is going to come in handy. (Questions? Don’t worry, we’ll get to that soon.)

Should I Pick Powder or Liquid Foundation?

Like we said, picking a foundation is personal, so what works for you might not work for your best friend or vice versa. When you’re picking, consider why you’re using the foundation. Generally, powder foundation will offer fuller coverage than liquid. Additionally, what kind of skin do you have? Is yours oily?

If so, you might prefer a powder foundation. Finally, think about the finish you want your foundation to have. While they’re comparable, powder usually looks a tiny bit more matte than liquid. If you’re looking for that dewy look, liquid might be for you.

In What Order Should I Apply My Makeup?

This is completely up to you! Some people start with complexion first while others prefer to start with eye makeup first to avoid having to clean up any eyeshadow fallout on your foundation.

How Do I Contour?

You’ve probably seen images of celebrity makeup artists contouring faces before, but did you know you can do it yourself? It’s true! In just a few steps, you can contour your face.

First, let’s review what contouring is. It is essentially the opposite of highlighting and involves putting darker shades of makeup on places you want to define. When you contour, you should find your undertone first, and then pick a shade of powder that's two or three shades darker.

After you’ve applied your foundation and concealer, suck in your cheeks and apply the contour shade to the hollows. Blend it in using back and forth motions.

Next, head to your forehead. Blend the contour into your hairline and then bring the brush down towards your temples. Remember to blend!

Lastly, contour along the length of your jawline and around your chin. Once again, be sure to blend so there are no awkward harsh lines. Finally, use a lighter powder or highlighter to dust along the top of your cheekbones. For some extra glow, you can also highlight your Cupid’s bow, brow bone, and nose. Voila!

What Is “Baking”?

Maybe you’ve heard the term “baking” before but haven’t quite figured out what exactly it means yet. Well, don’t worry. We’re here to help, and we have the answer you’ve been missing.

“Baking” makeup is becoming popular because it gives you a flawless, Red Carpet ready finish to your look. All it entails is putting a robust amount of translucent powder onto your face. (You can also use loose setting powder!) It “bakes” when you leave it on your face for 5-10 minutes after you’ve applied the rest of your makeup. The heat from your face allows for the makeup you’re wearing to oxidize, which sets the foundation and concealer. The powder works to absorb any extra oil. From there, just swipe the extra powder off your face and ta-da! You’ve successfully “baked” your makeup.

How Often Should I Clean My Makeup Brushes?

When it comes to makeup brushes, it’s so important to be sanitary. After all, you’re putting these brushes up to your skin daily, so ensuring they’re clean is your number one priority.

That being said, so many people don’t know how often you should really wash your brushes - and the answer might surprise you. Because of how close contact you have with your brushes, dermatologists will recommend you clean them once a week -- or even more.

We promise you: investing your time into cleaning them will prove to be worth it.

Conclusion

See? Makeup is plenty of fun, especially when you have all the tools and products necessary to apply it like a boss. Remember: if you don’t do it quite right the first time, don’t give up! Makeup is an art and takes practice.

We believe in you, and can’t wait to see how you shine in your Wander Beauty products!
