Expert Takeover Q&A with Dr. Nina Desai @drninadesai

We reached out to board-certified medical and cosmetic dermatologist, Dr. Nina Desai, to share her expertise on the important parts of a skincare routine and her favorite skincare ingredients. Here’s what she had to say.

What are the most important parts of the skincare routine?

The most important part of the skincare routine is consistency. Skincare products and ingredients have the ability to work wonders on your skin but it doesn't happen overnight. If you're consistent with your routine and consistent with the right ingredients, that's when you're going to notice the best results.

My three favorite ingredients to start any simple skincare routine begin with a good sunscreen. A sunscreen with at least SPF 30 that has both UVA and UVB coverage is going to allow you to protect your skin from harmful UV damage. UV damage is actually the biggest cause of premature aging, fine lines, wrinkles, and pigmentation. Another very important ingredient is vitamin C. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps to combat free radical damage in the skin. Free radicals come about because of damage or pollution that really irritates and harms skin and leads to fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation, and even skin cancers, so having an antioxidant like vitamin C on board is super crucial to any good skincare routine. The third ingredient is a retinoid. A retinoid is a vitamin A derivative that helps with cell turnover. That means it's going to get rid of those dead skin cells on the surface of the skin. You are going to reveal brighter, younger, smoother-looking skin if you're consistent with using a retinoid.

How can people better understand their skin type?

Understanding your skin type is crucial when perfecting your skincare routine. If you're using a product that's really thick or a heavier cream and you notice that your skin is starting to break out or feel really oily after using it then it's important to listen to your skin and know that that product is not the right product for you. On the flip side, if you're using an ingredient that's particularly drying or exfoliating and you notice that your skin starts to feel red, itchy, or flaky, then you also have to know that that product is not right for you. Listening to your skin and understanding if your skin is in balance with the products you're using is key. Knowing if you have oily, acne-prone, normal, combination, or dry skin is going to really help you protect your skin and pick the perfect products and the ingredients for your routine.

What is your favorite skincare ingredient?

As a dermatologist, it's no surprise that my favorite skincare ingredient is a good sunscreen. Having an SPF of at least 30 that has both UVA and UVB protection and reapplying that sunscreen throughout the day is going to be your best anti-aging ingredient. The reason being is that premature aging is actually primarily caused by sun exposure. Too much sun can lead to fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation, and of course skin cancers so having good sunscreen is so important. In addition to that, I really love antioxidants - in particular, vitamin C. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps protect our skin from what is known as free radical damage. Free radicals are created in our skin by too much sun exposure or pollution and they actually create abnormal skin cells leading to precancers. They also create fine lines and pigmentation so by protecting our skin with an antioxidant like vitamin C, we're really preserving our skin and allowing our skin to be the very best that it can be.

I'm a big fan of using vitamin C every morning. I cleanse my skin and then I apply my vitamin C. I love using the Wander Beauty Sight C-er Vitamin C Concentrate. It was so easy to incorporate into my skincare routine because it's packed with not only vitamin C so I know I'm protecting my skin from that free radical damage, but it also has other ingredients like vitamin E which helps boost the effects of the vitamin C. Niacinamide, which I love because of its anti-inflammatory properties and it just helps calm down any irritation on the skin. Sight C-er also has plant-derived squalane in it that helps to repair my skin barrier and helps to keep my skin hydrated. I used to use an additional moisturizer in the morning but now that I'm using Sight C-er, I actually cut out the moisturizer because the creamy texture just really allows my skin to stay hydrated so I don't need an additional moisturizer.

After I apply my Sight C-er, I just finish it up with a good sunscreen and I'm ready to go for the day!

What do you love most about Sight C-er Vitamin C Concentrate?

I love using this product because not only does it have vitamin C in it, but it has some great ingredients that really help keep my skin in balance. It has vitamin E which works in conjunction with vitamin C to really boost that antioxidant effect, so I know I'm getting the most protection. It also has Niacinamide, one of my favorite ingredients for any inflammation on the skin. This vitamin helps to calm down any redness or any irritation on my skin so having it in this product is such a benefit. I also love Sight C-er’s hydrating properties. In addition to the plant-derived squalane, it also has hyaluronic acid. With the hyaluronic acid in it, I'm rebuilding my skin barrier, protecting my skin barrier, and really allowing my skin to stay hydrated. Sight C-er has helped streamline my routine so I don't even need to use a moisturizer in the morning anymore.

If you’re looking for a product that's packed with antioxidants and hydrating ingredients and has a creamy consistency that's so easy to use and great for all skin types, I highly recommend the Wander Beauty Sight C-er Vitamin C Concentrate. Add this to your a.m. routine on a daily basis and you're going to notice brighter, smoother-looking skin in no time.
